Reel mowers for sports fields and golf courses

Reel mowers for sports fields and golf courses

A great playing surface starts with the right cut. Whether you manage a bermudagrass sports field, maintain golf course fairways, or prepare a facility for tournament play, your mower affects turf appearance, mowing consistency, and the quality of the finished surface.

For closely maintained turf, reel mowers for sports fields and golf courses deliver the precise cutting action turf professionals depend on. At Turf Equipment Rentals, we help golf course superintendents, sports field managers, grounds crews, and turf contractors select reel mower rentals that fit their grass, acreage, and maintenance goals.

From triplex reel mower rentals to 5-gang reel mower rentals, our focus is matching the equipment to the application. We speak turf.

What is a reel mower?

A reel mower uses a rotating cylinder of curved blades that passes against a stationary bedknife. Together, these cutting edges shear the grass with a scissor-like action.

When the reel and bedknife are sharp and correctly adjusted, this cutting system produces a clean, uniform finish. That precision makes reel mowing especially valuable for fine turf maintained at low heights, including golf fairways, tees, and closely managed natural-grass sports fields.

A reel mower works best within a consistent maintenance program. It is designed to maintain an appropriate turf height, rather than remove large amounts of overgrown grass in a single pass.

What is a triplex reel mower?

A triplex reel mower has three cutting units, arranged to overlap and cover a continuous mowing swath. Independently moving cutting units help the mower follow surface contours.

Its relatively compact layout makes a triplex useful where maneuverability and access matter. Depending on the model and cutting-unit configuration, applications can include golf tees, approaches, surrounds, smaller sports fields, and other closely maintained turf areas.

A triplex is not automatically a putting-green mower. Dedicated greens triplexes use cutting units designed for extremely low mowing. Other triplex models are intended for tees, fairways, surrounds, or sports turf. The correct rental depends on the target cutting height and the actual mower configuration.

What is a 5-gang reel mower?

A 5-gang reel mower has five cutting units working across a wider mowing swath. “Five-gang” refers to the number of cutting units—not the number of blades on each reel.

For larger, relatively open areas, a 5-gang mower can cover more ground per pass than a smaller machine. Common applications include golf course fairways, athletic complexes, practice fields, and extensive fine-turf areas.

The choice between a triplex and a 5-gang is about more than acreage. Gate widths, landscaping, turning space, terrain, and transport access also influence which machine will work efficiently on your property.

Reel mower vs. rotary mower: what is the difference?

A sharp rotary mower can produce an excellent cut at an appropriate height. A reel mower becomes particularly valuable when the grass and playing-surface requirements call for a lower, more consistent finish. The right choice depends on the job.

Which grasses benefit from reel mowing

Hybrid bermudagrass is a major application for reel mowing on sports fields, golf tees, and fairways. Fine-textured varieties maintained at low heights benefit from a properly adjusted reel mower.

Creeping bentgrass and other putting-green grasses require specialized reel mowing when managed at putting-green heights. This is a different application from routine fairway or sports-field mowing.

Zoysiagrass can benefit from reel mowing where a dense, low-cut finish is desired. The cultivar and maintenance height determine whether a reel or rotary mower is the better fit.

Kikuyugrass and common bermudagrass can be maintained with either reel or rotary equipment at suitable heights. Reel mowing may be selected for the appearance and consistency required by a particular facility.

Perennial ryegrass, including overseeded sports turf, can also be reel-mowed when the mower setup and maintenance program suit the desired playing surface.

Grass species alone does not determine the machine. Cultivar, climate, season, surface condition, and desired mowing height all matter.

How low can a reel mower cut

Reel mowers cover a wide range of cutting heights, but the lowest setting on a mower is not automatically the right height for your turf.

These examples illustrate the difference between turf-management targets and equipment capability:

For perspective, Baroness lists a 1.5–28 mm range for its LM315GC greens mower and a 10–60 mm range for the Type F LM3210. These examples show why confirming the actual cutting units and rental setup is essential; they do not identify the specifications of every machine in our fleet.

Tell our team your target height before reserving a golf course mower rental or sports field reel mower rental. We can help identify a suitable configuration for your application.

What creates a quality reel-mower cut

A clean cut depends on more than choosing a reel mower. Reel and bedknife condition, cutting-unit adjustment, roller settings, reel speed, and ground speed all influence the result.

Proper setup helps produce an even canopy with fewer ragged leaf tips. Rollers and mowing direction can also create the striped appearance associated with professionally maintained fields and fairways. Striping reflects how the grass lies; it does not mean alternate stripes should be cut at different heights.

For the best results:

·        Maintain sharp cutting edges and follow the mower’s adjustment instructions.

·        Match reel speed and travel speed to the cutting height and turf conditions.

·        Remove no more than about one-third of the leaf height in a routine mowing.

·        Lower overgrown turf gradually rather than scalping it to the final target.

·        Inspect for debris and uneven areas that could damage cutting units or affect the finish.
